Port City Animal Hospital Welcomes Associate Veterinarian Dr. Abby Claytor

Port City Animal Hospital is excited to announce that Dr. Abby Claytor has joined their team as an Associate Veterinarian!

Dr. Claytor grew up in Columbia, South Carolina, as the youngest of four girls. She was raised with an eye on adventure and was taught to love all creatures. Whether helping with an injured wild bird or a neighbor’s hurt pet, Dr. Claytor has loved animals since she was a young girl. She cannot remember a time when her heart was not set on becoming a veterinarian.

Dr. Claytor earned her undergraduate degree from Clemson University and then attended veterinary school at Auburn University, where she graduated in 2020. After graduation, Abby chose to practice in the low country and moved to Savannah.

The most important parts of Abby’s home are her two Labradors Harper and Rose, who are her heart. She continues to enjoy outdoor activities and loves living close to the beach. Her newest passion is DIY projects around the house as she gets great satisfaction from fixing and creating things herself.

In a field once dominated by men, the veterinary profession has shifted in the last few decades, now employing more women than ever. In fact, Dr. Claytor’s graduating class had 108 women and just 12 men. Though some prejudice still exists, and there are instances of salary disparities within the veterinary industry, Dr. Claytor has not allowed these potential barriers to keep her from accomplishing her dreams.

Dr. Claytor has found a practice she truly loves at Port City Animal Hospital. She and owner Dr. Jeremy Faris create an “all are family” culture. The staff know each other’s family members and treat each other as such. This same culture is taken into the exam room where they treat each client and patient as if they too are family. This extra care and attention is apparent on your very first visit. They have very loyal clients, one of whom drives four and a half hours just to see Dr. Faris because, well, there is no one like him!

Port City Animal Hospital is a Fear-Free certified veterinary hospital. They employ methods that help animals feel safe and comfortable while in the hospital, a practice that has become ever more challenging during the pandemic. Dr. Claytor says, “we are not going to force your pets to do anything they don’t want to do. We take great care to alleviate your pets fear, anxiety and stress as well as your own.” This certification ensures a healthy environment and one that pets and owners alike are eager to come back to. What’s not to love about that!

Port City Animal Hospital has built a reputation as a first-class veterinary hospital near Pooler offering full service care for the pets we love.
